What else can you do to prevent potential burn out?

10 of 15 in our We Love Recruitment Series

Recruiters also prevent burnout by taking care of business but also making time for exercise and rest. Recruiters can remember that holidays are there to be used, booked in advance and giving you something to look forward to or work towards. Not on top of things at home? Use a day off for personal or family admin. There's no prize at the end of a year for not using all your time off and don't fear asking for it (or fear having a request denied), simply be realistic in the context of your own well-being and workload. Strive to work smarter and improve quality, not always longer and harder. Pay attention to what you're doing when you are at work, don't simply go through the motions.

Remember, your boss can't do your job for you and they probably aren't a qualified counsellor, financial advisor or accountant but they are there to support you. So, whilst not every Recruitment Agency has a Clinical Psychologist on speed dial or an IFA they can refer you to, as Recruitment Panda does, make sure you're getting 1-1 time with your boss whomever your agency is. 1-1 time is not just about work, it's about keeping management aware of your personal circumstances. Also, make sure you know what your agency's policies are for annual leave, parental leave, maternity and paternity leave and compassionate leave. Above all, make sure you know what the expectations are of you, from the outset and how they will change over time. Not hitting your basic activity output for a fortnight is not a good way to build up to an annual leave request at short notice. Be reasonable and organised and plan ahead.

Only by knowing these things can you know that you're ready to do what it takes to rise to the challenges. Try to remain honest with yourself and your manager at all times and recognise that every setback comes with a learning opportunity. Taking that attitude will prevent you from becoming burnt out. Be philosophical and take things on board but don't beat yourself up.

The best Recruitment Consultants are not invincible, they realise there are some things they can't control but also accept their own failures without apportioning too much blame on themselves or on those around them. They learn, adapt, and become increasingly adept at controlling the controllable and avoid burnout, through smart working, timely self-care and by being proactive in seeking advice and support when necessary.
