Emma has years of clinical experience working in both the private nursing home and NHS sectors.
Let me tell you a story, its a good story,
I have been helping Nurses and Nurse managers develop their career in the private sector for 5 years now, concentrating my work in the South West, I have some great clients that I work with, regularly visiting the homes, to see the working environments that my nurses go to.
8 weeks ago during the floods, do you remember the floods before Covid 19, I drove into Somerset, a 400 mile round trip from Manchester where I am based. I didnt want to go, I was moody, and had fallen out of love with the Nursing Home sector, I left my purse on my kitchen table, so couldn't even get a coffee on the way to my meeting, and to make matters worse there were 12 black flood warnings for Somerset, where I was heading for.
I got to the meeting at one of the Nursing Homes, and was there for 3 and a quarter hours. Firstly, they gave me £30 so I could get home to Manchester, so lovely.
They then told me in detail about the working enviornments they provide for their colleagues.
They have a fast track system for End of Life Care, they have trained 3 non nurse HCA Level 3s, to run the End of Life provision, and it is Award Winning. They always have two registered nurses on duty at night, and during the day, normally around 4 nurses. They are an organisation that does NOT scrimp on the amount of staff, with ratios of around 1:4-5, they even have volunteers chosing to come and work for them.
They understand the emotional toll End of Life work can have on staff, and have a full time counsellor on the team to support staff who may need assistance and when she is not supporting staff, she is teaching Tai Chi to the residents.
The residents are looked after so well, I saw it with my own eyes. This organisation has put another level of carer into their staff team, these people will just sit with residents, do a jigsaw, write a letter, watch a tele programme, play a game of cards, or just sit and enjoy a brew with the resident, in addition to the activity co-ordinators.
We even talked about empty beds, there were 8 empty beds at the time in the home I was visiting, but this is no concern, this group want to be sure that all their residents get on with each other, and so wait for the right sort of client. It is not about the money , it is about the residents, the people that call the Nursing Home their Home. So three and a quarter hours later, I am convinced this is one of the best organisations in Bristol to be involved with, they are not corporate, they care.
This is a strong kind organisation that support their staff, and I would happily reccommend them as employers
